About Poway

Affectionately known as the “City in the Country,” Poway is a popular chance for prospective San Diego homeowners. Located east of I-15, between the sprawling communities of Scripps Ranch and Rancho Bernardo, Poway offers a range of housing options along with easy access to both freeways and beautiful hiking trails.

The name “Poway” is tied back to the people who historically lived in this area, the Diegueno and Luiseno people. Stemming from the word “Pauwai” or “Paguay,” the word generally means “the end of the valley” or “the meeting of little valleys.” Many families settled in the Poway area in the 1800s and built homesteads to farm the land. By the late 1800s, the community had grown to almost 1,000 people. The San Diego Central and Southern Pacific Railways once planned to lay train tracks through Poway, until they abandoned the plan and built the railroad line to Escondido instead. Today, Poway is a robust community with large lot sizes and a sense of small-town community that has persisted into the 21st century.
