About Oceanside

Oceanside’s history dates back to the late 1700s, when the San Luis Rey Valley was first explored by Spanish Explorer Portola. The Mission San Luis Rey de Francia was built in 1798, becoming the largest building in California upon completion. In the 1800s, the town of San Luis Rey was established nearby, which brought more people to the coastal region. Andrew Jackson Myers, who received a Homestead Grant on the Oceanside mesa, is considered the founder of Oceanside as he owned the first land and built the first house. By the late 1800s, Oceanside had a post office, a bank, a hotel, and a wharf. It was officially incorporated in 1888. Since the establishment of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in 1942, Oceanside has been home to U.S. armed forces personnel. Today, Oceanside is a thriving community populated by civilians, active duty military, and veterans.

The city of Encinitas got its start way back in 1881. The name “Encinitas” is Spanish for “little oaks.” Many historic landmarks still stand in Encinitas today including the Olivenhain Meeting Hall (built in 1894), the first one room school house in Encinitas (built in 1883), the Santa Fe Railroad Station (now Pannikin Coffee and Tea), La Paloma Theatre (opened in 1928), and the Self-Realization Fellowship Gardens (built in 1937). Encinitas was incorporated in 1986 and has continued to grow into the thriving San Diego neighborhood we see today.

Oceanside Harbor is a true hidden gem. As you drive into the harbor, you’ll be greeted by rows of docked sailboats. As the only harbor between Orange County and San Diego, Oceanside is a great location for travelers cruising along the California coastline. Oceanside Harbor has a fuel dock, launch ramp, bait receiver, and slip rentals available. It’s a great place to head out for a day of sport fishing, whale watching, or sailing. You can even rent kayaks, jet skis, and Duffy boats. Oceanside Harbor is also home to a variety of restaurants and shops.

Oceanside Lifestyle

If you’re looking to explore more of what Oceanside has to offer, be sure to check out the Downtown area. Not only is it full of unique local businesses and mom-and-pop shops, but it’s also home to some of the best quality restaurants in the area. This is thanks to the fact that commercial leasing is a bit less expensive here, so many locally owned spots set up shop. One iconic spot to visit is the famous Top Gun House, which was used as a filming location for the movie back in 1985. Now fully restored, the house has been turned into a pie shop. Its restoration was part of the grand opening of the Mission Pacific Hotel and the Seabird Resort, two new stunning coastal resort hotels in Downtown Oceanside. There are also plenty of museums to visit, outdoor wall murals to admire, and a weekly farmer’s market, the Sunset Market. Oceanside’s status as one of California’s first fourteen designated cultural districts makes it a must-visit spot for arts and culture enthusiasts. The town’s major transit stop is also a nice resource, making it easy to catch a train or bus to nearby destinations like LA or Downtown San Diego.
