Explore the Legacy of Ocean Science at Scripps Institution of Oceanography

Ever wondered what it’s like behind the scenes at one of the world’s most respected marine science institutions? The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego offers free, guided tours twice a month that are as inspiring as they are informative.

These one-hour tours are held on the second and fourth Saturday of each month (excluding holidays) and offer an inside look at the storied history and ongoing research happening at Scripps. Visitors can explore scenic spots on campus, including the iconic Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier, while learning about the cutting-edge science behind topics like coral reef restoration, shark conservation, and pollution studies — including the groundbreaking research on how Tijuana River pollution is affecting San Diego’s air quality.

Tours fill up fast during summer, so reservations are required. And if you can't make it in person, don't worry — a virtual tour and self-guided map are also available. It’s a perfect educational stop for curious minds of all ages.

Dive Into the Deep at Birch Aquarium

Located right next to Scripps, Birch Aquarium at UC San Diego is a favorite for families, marine life lovers, and ocean advocates. And this summer, it’s better than ever.

From May 31 through July 3, Birch is open late daily until 7 PM — giving you more time to explore its exhibits with a sunset view of the La Jolla coastline. Stroll through the all-new Adam R. Scripps Living Seas Gallery, the largest renovation in the aquarium’s history. This immersive exhibit features 38 unique habitats, including a Giant Pacific Octopus, a vibrant tropical coral reef, and an “under-the-pier” experience where you can see what’s really happening beneath the waves.

One of this summer’s most talked-about features is the rare 11-foot oarfish on display. Known in folklore as a “doomsday fish,” this deep-sea creature was found washed up in Encinitas and offers a rare glimpse into the mysterious world of ocean giants. The exhibit blends myth, science, and storytelling in a way that will leave kids and adults equally captivated.

You’ll also find jellyfish, Japanese spider crabs, and a California kelp forest exhibit that invites you to interact with the underwater ecosystems that make our coastline so unique. Pro tip: if you book tickets for the last two hours of the day, you can save $5 with the aquarium’s Plan Ahead discount.

Plan Your Ocean Adventure

Make a day of it: Start your morning with a guided tour of Scripps, grab lunch nearby, and head to Birch Aquarium for an evening of ocean wonder. Don’t forget to stop by the Blue Wave Bistro for snacks and drinks with a view!

Whether you're exploring ocean science history or getting up close with sea creatures, these experiences offer a unique chance to learn, reflect, and connect with the marine world that surrounds us.

Your summer by the sea starts now.
