Living in Scripps Ranch: A Neighborhood Tour
Although Scripps Ranch lacks the beaches and some of the attractions of the Coastal San Diego cities, we think Scripps Ranch is anything, but boring! In this video, Courtney and I take you on a neighborhood tour of Scripps Ranch to show you some of our favorite places and spaces.
Scripps Ranch Swim and Racquet Club
Although we’ve never actually been inside this place, the Scripps Ranch Swim and Racquet Club is certainly enormously popular with residents. The waiting list to become a member is four years long! At the Scripps Ranch Swim and Racquet Club, you can swim, play tennis, pickleball, or racquet ball, take a wide variety of fitness classes, and enjoy members-only events and entertainment.
If you’re looking to buy a home in Scripps Ranch and the current owner already has a membership, they can transfer it to you, which is neat perk. Otherwise you’ll need to join the list and wait for your turn to come up.
The French Oven
The French Oven bills itself as one of the most authentic French restaurants in San Diego and it certainly lives up to that promise! From artisan pastries and deserts to fragrant bread, sandwiches, and specialty French cuisine, everything they serve is fresh and delicious. Be sure to check out their dinner specials! You can find The French Oven off Scripps Trail at the little shopping center where Market at the Ranch and Pazzo’s Pizza are.
Hoyt Park
Scripps Ranch is full of beautiful parks, but one of our favorites is Hoyt Park. Surrounded by eucalyptus trees, this big, grassy park is the site of some of Scripps Ranch’s most notable annual events including the Scripps Ranch Symphony, 4 th of July, and more. In addition to walking and biking paths, you can access area hiking trails from Hoyt Park.
Jerabek Park
Jerabek Park is another top park in the Scripps Ranch Neighborhood. In addition to boasting playgrounds and grassy fields, Jerabek Park has these “pyramid structures” which were actually built by MacMillan Home Builders. They built many of the housing developments in the area, created these pyramids and placed them around Scripps Ranch as a sort of community scavenger hunt to get people to visit the model homes. Courtney and I actually found a couple on our visit in the video!
Hunters of Hendrix
This is a local Scripps Ranch coffee shop that brews up a great cup of coffee and delicious baked goods including our favorite treat – doughnuts! They also have Macadamia nut milk, which you often don’t see on the menu of most places. We gave Hunters of Hendrix a 10/10!
Lake Miramar
One of the most well-known attractions in the Scripps Ranch area is the tranquil Lake Miramar. Technically a reservoir, it is surrounded by a five-mile paved path that is perfect for jogging, biking, or just strolling along the lake and enjoying the view. You can boat, kayak, or tube on the lake, which is a popular activity in the warmer months. You can also fish in the lake!
Hibert Street Shopping Center
Around the corner from Scripps Ranch High School is a great little shopping area that boasts a Trader Joe’s, a Breakfast Republic, a Chuck E. Cheese, and a Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ among other businesses. You can find Courtney’s favorite sushi spot, Kappa Sushi, here, along with one of my favorite sandwich spots, Board & Brew. There are also several craft breweries just a short drive away.
Overlook Park
This park offers one of the best views in Scripps Ranch, if not San Diego! Enjoy beautiful sunset views over Lake Miramar and several Scripps Ranch neighborhoods. On clear days, you can see all the way out to the coast and the ocean beyond! It has a playground and gazebos you can rent for parties. There’s also BBQ grills available.
Living in Scripps Ranch
While not exactly “places and spaces,” we wanted to close with a few quick reasons why people love living in Scripps Ranch. First, the local schools are excellent. The elementary, middle, and high schools are all highly rated on GreatSchools and Niche.com. Location-wise, you’re only about twenty minutes from Downtown San Diego and the 15 freeway is easy to access to get around the county. It will take you a bit longer to get to the beach from this inland location, but Scripps Ranch tends to have great, sunny weather so if you’d rather skip living near the beach and enjoy your backyard pool instead, this is the place. You have a little bit more space in the neighborhoods without people right on top of you. It also tends to be a bit quieter than some other areas of San Diego.
