San Marcos just got a new local gem. After months of anticipation, Michi Brew Co. officially opened its doors on May 3, bringing tropical vibes, community spirit, and a fresh lineup of beers to North County.
Founded by veteran brewer Cody Gagnon, Michi Brew Co. is more than just a taproom—it's a love letter to Hawaiian culture, family values, and the San Diego craft beer scene. Named after Gagnon’s wife, Michiko, the brewery takes its cues from tiki traditions, creating a warm and welcoming space where guests are invited to become part of the ‘ohana.
Located in the former Double Peak Brewing space at 1801 Diamond Street, Suite 101, Michi Brew Co. has been completely transformed. Inside, lush greens and lava-inspired oranges reflect a rainforest hike the couple once took, while festive lighting, floral curtains, and hand-carved tiki masks create a laid-back island atmosphere. A cozy lounge and private “Ohana Room” offer additional space to unwind, gather, or host events.
On tap during opening weekend were five crowd-pleasing beers:
- Cenote – Mexican-style Lager (4.5%)
- Akita – Rice Lager (5%)
- Mungo – Extra Pale Ale (5.9%)
- Memphre – Double Dry-Hopped Hazy IPA (6.4%)
- Chelan – West Coast IPA (7%)

Each brew showcases Gagnon’s attention to detail, particularly his use of reverse osmosis to fine-tune water profiles and enhance each beer’s distinct flavor. On May 4, the team also released a playful limited-edition beer called Mythosaur, a Star Wars-themed imperial fruited ale brewed with dragonfruit, pink guava, strawberry, and jamaica.
Beyond the beer, Michi Brew Co. has big plans for food. The menu will feature Asian-Hawaiian fusion dishes inspired by Gagnon’s family recipes, with plans to expand into breakfast, coffee, and patio service. A unique twist: each food item will be paired with a curated beer sample, creating an educational and immersive dining experience.
At the grand opening, guests packed the brewery and spilled out into the roped-off parking lot to enjoy food from Fuego Me Up and live music from local rock band The Thieves About—a celebration that perfectly captured the brewery’s mission: good food, good beer, good people.
If you haven’t stopped by yet, Michi Brew Co. is now open seven days a week. Whether you’re looking for a casual pint, a place to gather with friends, or a new local spot with serious heart, Michi Brew Co. is ready to welcome you home.
