If you live along the 56 Freeway and love coffee, I’ve got some big news—and it’s a bit of a mixed bag.
‘The End of an Era: Bad Ass Coffee Closing in Rancho Peñasquitos’
After 10 years in business, Bad Ass Coffee in Rancho Peñasquitos will be closing for good on February 9th. This spot had built a loyal following over the years, offering reasonably priced coffee and solid breakfast sandwiches. It was a great alternative to some of the more expensive coffee chains in the area.
Unfortunately, rising rents have made it difficult for them to stay competitive in an already crowded coffee market. While it’s always tough to see a local favorite close its doors, this seems to be an ongoing trend for small businesses in San Diego.
What’s Next? Better Buzz Coffee is Moving In
If you were worried about an empty storefront, don’t be—Better Buzz Coffee is set to take over the space sometime this summer. For those keeping track, this will be their 21st location, with another one coming soon off Poway Road.
Now, I do like Better Buzz—their coffee is solid, and they’ve built a strong brand in San Diego. But here’s the thing… it’s not exactly a budget-friendly swap. By my count, Better Buzz prices are around $1 more per drink compared to Bad Ass Coffee.
What This Means for Coffee Lovers in PQ
For Rancho Peñasquitos, this change represents a shift from a longtime neighborhood staple to a bigger brand that’s expanding rapidly throughout the county. Some people will welcome it, while others will miss the more affordable and familiar vibe of Bad Ass Coffee.
I personally have mixed feelings—I liked the quality and pricing at Bad Ass, but I also enjoy Better Buzz. Still, it’s another sign of how much San Diego’s coffee scene is evolving.
