After six years of scaffolding, careful restoration, and a price tag of over half a billion dollars, the legendary Hotel del Coronado has officially reopened — and it’s more breathtaking than ever.
Since first opening its doors in 1888, The Del has hosted presidents, celebrities, and travelers from around the world. Now, following a $550 million restoration led by Hilton and Blackstone Real Estate, the iconic beachfront resort is stepping into a bold new era — one that honors its rich past while embracing the future.
A Grand Reopening for the Ages
On June 18, 2025, the Hotel del Coronado celebrated its second official grand opening — only the second in its 137-year history. The event was emceed by actress Brooke Shields, with local dignitaries like Rep. Scott Peters also in attendance.
“This is a defining characteristic of our region,” Peters said. “We’re proud to see The Del restored to its full glory.”
The renovation added more than 750 guest rooms, two brand-new restaurants, and roughly 300 new permanent jobs — not to mention thousands of construction jobs created over the life of the project.

Victorian Beauty, Reimagined
The heart of the renovation focused on The Victorian Neighborhood, home to the original 1888 building. Every inch was painstakingly restored by preservation experts, from the elegant front porch and lobby to the Crown Room, Ocean Ballroom, and Coronet Room event spaces.
Even the Naiad Queen Fountain, once a centerpiece of the central garden courtyard, has returned — a bronze replica cast from an original found in Washington state.
Inside the guest rooms, no two are exactly alike. Each has been reimagined with antique-inspired furniture, modern amenities, and beautiful details like checkerboard marble bathrooms, botanical prints, and Chinoiserie lamps. It’s a thoughtful blend of old-world charm and modern comfort.

Culinary Upgrades
Foodies, rejoice: two new dining destinations have debuted at The Del.
- Nobu Del Coronado brings the world-famous Japanese fusion of Chef Nobu Matsuhisa to the coast, featuring signature dishes like Lobster Truffle Tempura and an eight-seat sushi bar with ocean views.
- Veranda is a more relaxed, California-inspired restaurant offering al fresco dining on the newly restored wraparound porch. Think grilled artichokes, crab wedge salads, and sunset views with your glass of wine.
Preserving the Past While Building the Future
This restoration wasn’t just about luxury — it was about legacy. Architectural firm Heritage Architecture & Planning led the project with an eye for detail and history, earning top honors from preservation organizations statewide.
According to JP Oliver, area managing director, “This project ensures The Del will continue welcoming guests for generations to come.”
