Each spring, the rolling hills of North San Diego County burst into a vibrant spectacle of color as The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch® come to life. Spanning 55 acres, these breathtaking Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers create one of the most remarkable floral displays in the world. Blooming from early March through early May, this annual event marks the arrival of spring in Southern California, attracting visitors from near and far who come to experience the magic of nature’s artistry.
A Rich History Rooted in Floral Cultivation
The beauty of The Flower Fields is the result of nearly 85 years of careful cultivation, dating back to the 1920s when horticulturist Luther Gage introduced ranunculus seeds to the region. He planted them alongside Frank Frazee’s vegetable farm in South Oceanside. Frank Frazee and his son Edwin played a crucial role in shaping the ranunculus fields as they are known today. Edwin dedicated his life to the flower-growing industry, refining the ranunculus through selective breeding, ultimately creating the lush, multi-petaled blooms in 13 vibrant colors that visitors admire today.
In 1965, Edwin Frazee moved his ranunculus-growing operation to its current site on land owned by the Ecke Family of Encinitas, known for their famous poinsettias. This partnership helped solidify the future of The Flower Fields. In 1993, as Edwin neared retirement, Paul Ecke Jr. invited Mellano and Company, another family with deep roots in flower farming, to continue the cultivation of the ranunculus. Ecke also recognized the potential for agritourism, transforming The Flower Fields into a beloved visitor attraction while preserving its agricultural legacy.
The Flower Fields Today
Now managed by Mellano and Company, The Flower Fields offer visitors more than just a stunning floral display. The site has evolved into a unique combination of a working ranch and a regional attraction. In addition to the breathtaking ranunculus fields, guests can explore an Armstrong Garden Center, learn about the rich history of the area, and even host special events at the picturesque Paul Ecke Jr. Barn.
