Loews Coronado Bay Resort, a staple on San Diego Bay for over 30 years, is planning a massive $220 million makeover that’s set to bring fresh energy to the property—and a bonus for locals. Part of the renovation includes a new, expanded bayfront promenade with stunning water views, designed to connect more seamlessly with the nearby Bayshore Bikeway and North Cays Park.
The proposed plans, still in the early stages, were recently previewed by the San Diego Port Commissioners. The vision is to transform the resort into a sleek, modern destination that can compete with other luxury coastal retreats. Situated on a 15-acre peninsula near Silver Strand State Beach, the resort operates under a long-term lease with the Port of San Diego, set to expire in 2034. As part of the renovation, Loews is requesting an extension on their lease, but negotiations are still ongoing.
The upgrades will include a full refresh of the 440 guest rooms, food and beverage spaces, and outdoor areas. A second pool will be added, and a temporary tent structure currently used for events will be replaced with a permanent meetings facility. The existing restaurant, Crown Landing, will be redesigned into a single cohesive dining space, while outdoor areas will be transformed into a Sunset Bar overlooking the marina with views of the Pacific Ocean.
Perhaps the most exciting change is the plan to remove the current driveway and parking spaces encircling the northern and eastern sides of the resort, allowing for uninterrupted pedestrian access to the shoreline. This reimagined promenade will offer guests and locals alike a welcoming space to enjoy the waterfront.
While there’s no set timeline for when the environmental review and lease negotiations will be finalized, this project marks a significant step forward for the property. The renovation aims to honor the resort’s iconic location and history while offering a modern, elevated experience for visitors and locals. It’s a big move for Loews, and one that promises to breathe new life into this cherished San Diego landmark.
