Top 4 Kid Friendly Restaurants Off the 56 Freeway

When your kids are feeling hangry (that’s a real word, BTW), you probably do one of two things: speed through local Yelp listings via a keyword search, or opt for the drive thru.  When that just won’t do, turn to this guide to help you weed through the best solutions to feed your family when it’s crunch time:

1. Urban Plates

Hours of Operation
SUN – THURS: 11:00 am – 9:30 pm
FRI & SAT : 11:00 am – 10:00 pm
With an earthy farmhouse vibe inside to go and a menu that features everything from soups & salads, sandwiches & pizzettes, and braises & stews.  The kid’s menu has a variety of tasty and healthy choices that range in price between $7.50 and $8.50 with steak or chicken plates, macaroni & cheese or pepperoni & cheese pizzettes available to enjoy.  For dessert, your kiddos can enjoy the towering layer cakes, gorgeous mini-tarts, fresh-baked cookies and more.  These delectable treats will make it difficult to cruise past without picking something up before you hit the road.

2. Mendocino Farms

Hours of Operation
Daily: 11:00 am – 9:00 pm
Mendocino Farms is a fast-casual restaurant that specializes in locally sourced ingredients with a menu that changes with the seasons, offering guests a plethora of dining option at reasonable prices.  With prices in the $10-plus range for most of the entrees (without sides), this location specializes in building bold sandwiches and salads using fine dining-quality ingredients.  The Del Mar location sports a couple of cool cow statues (with one perched on top of the restaurant itself).  The patio features a public cornhole game and foosball table that is free to play.

3. Breakfast Republic

Hours of Operation
Daily: 7:00 am to 3:00 pm
This California staple opened this delectable outpost in Carmel Vally in December 2017 (it’s 7th location in San Diego County) to rave reviews from locals ever since.  This establishment has fun names for ingredients such as Jurassic Pork which will be sure to cause a giggle and probably start a conversation about the next Jurassic World movie.  This location has plenty of options for kids that love Pancakes (try the Churro Pancakes!), Scrambles, and French Toast dishes.  The menu also features many gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options for health-conscious foodies.
Word to the wise: The wait is notoriously long (roughly 45-60 minutes on average), but it’s worth it.

4. Snooze An AM Eatery

Hours of Operation
Daily: 6:30 am – 2:30 pm
This bougie restaurant specializes in creative and comforting renditions on breakfast classics.  Although Snooze doesn’t have a kid’s menu, there are still plenty of great breakfast treats that are sure to drive your kids wild.  With mouth-watering options such as brioche stuffed French toast, a pancake flight of three of your favorite options, or delectable scrambled eggs.  If your kids are feeling a little more adventurous and fit to climb the foodie ladder, the “Sandwich I Am” breakfast sammie (it’s a soft pretzel roll filled with scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese and a sausage patty) might be right up their alley.
Heads up: If you go during peak times, be prepared to wait at least an hour for a table.  But the public consensus from is that when you finally sink your teeth into your meal, it’s all worth it.
